The rumors that Apple has removed the .35mm headphone jack from the iPhone appear to be verified this week when Nowherewlse leaked a package insert showing what’s to be included in the box of the iPhone 7.

All of the juicy deets

Heres the details: The insert shows one of the phones will be called the “iPhone 7 Plus”. Presumably the other will be called, wait for it, the “iPhone 7”.

But even if the naming conventions aren’t revolutionary, the new headphone system will be.

The text on the insert shows that “Lightning EarPods” will be included with every one of the new phones. These headphones will likely keep the distinctive shiny white aesthetic of previous Apple headphones but will connect though the lightning port instead of a headphone jack.

Included also is a lightning to .35mm converter which is nice of Apple, considering they usually sell adapters separately and at premium prices.

But how will I experience my tunes?!?

There’s expected to be an option to upgrade to “Air Pods”. Not to be confused with “Air Buds” which is a movie franchise in which a golden retriever plays basketball that my kids are inexplicably obsessed with.

No, “Air Pods” are assumed to be a wireless, bluetooth version of the lightning “Ear Pods”.

This is an interesting move because Apple already offers wireless headphones through its hip adopted baby company Beats, but the companies have kept business pretty autonomous since the acquisition.

Apple loves to slim things down and get rid of extra hardware. It makes sense they’d do away with two ports when they could have one. I guess the only thing that will change is that you can’t  charge your phone and have your non-bluetooth headphones plugged in simultaneously.

Apple is expected to announce the new iPhone model on September 7th with all sorts of new features and, it seems, make headphone jacks go the way of the optical disk drive.
