How do we get promoted?

In our careers, we are generally searching for that next benchmark or step up that keeps us advancing. It’s a general fact that promotions are given because of hard work. But, what components are necessary to keep us motivated?

In a video featured below, titled “How to Get a Promotion (3 Step Plan)” from the Mike and Lauren YouTube Channel, it is determined that advice given to someone looking to get ahead in an entry level position may be the same for someone further in their career.

A three-step process to success

The video states that there are three phases: Prove you’re responsible, become a silent influencer, and become invaluable. Okay, sounds simple enough, but how does one make these ideas come to life?

First, know the claim that time is money is debunked. We are paid for our value, as our employers expect our work to generate money for the company (while not necessarily directly).

So, in order to create more money, we need to create more value. Creating value is achieved through marketable skills, which is achieved through responsibility. This brings us back to phase one: Prove you’re responsible.

Prove you’re responsible

The first way to prove responsibility is through punctuality. Be the first one at work every single day, no excuses. Prove to your boss that you are reliable and dependable.

Next, constantly be working. If there is a lull in the day, do not use that as a time to answer a text or check Facebook. Make yourself useful by organizing, cleaning, or catching up on side projects.

The last bit of advice: be a good co-worker. This sounds like a no-brainer, but it can be difficult to always make nice with everyone. However, if it is a promotion you are seeking, this is critical. If you are viewed as unlikeable, that works it’s way up the chain to the person determining your future.

We would add that keeping a log of your accomplishments and qualities will help when you’re pitching yourself at review time.

Become a silent influencer

The second phase is described as someone who is “quick to perform, but slow to take credit”. The idea is that you are working for the good of the company, not for your own benefit.

While doing this, you work to build everyone else around you up. By working effectively and proving patience and competent, you become an asset to the team.

Become invaluable

You have confidently worked yourself to a point of promotion potential. You have worked hard to prove yourself worthy, and your value is maxed out at the responsibility and pay level you are at.

Putting it all together

By proving you’re responsible, becoming a silent influencer, and becoming invaluable, you are able to heighten your marketable skills. As a result, you are able to brand and catapult yourself to more success and, likely, more money.
